Tai Chi Shibashi Instructors Course: OCN accredited

Gill Brydon and her colleagues at Somerset Skills and Learning have developed an ONC accredited course ‘Tai Chi for Health’ that is of an exceptionally high standard. The course is developed to teach an in depth understanding of Tai Chi/Qigong Shibashi principles combined with knowledge of appropriate anatomy and physiology. The emphasis is on learning to facilitate this understanding so as to meet the limitations and needs of potential learners. The required standard of achievement  throughout the course is thorough. I would recommend this course to any practitioner of Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi who wishes to share their practice with others. Students of this course should be confident in the knowledge that they have achieved a reputable and nationally recognised qualification, worthy of facilitating the practice of Shibashi/ Tai Chi for Health.

This was my first course on line and I was surprised how good it was.  The support was excellent, in fact, better than other courses I have attended.  The 24 hours access on the computer was the “icing on the cake.”

This course has given me a real sense of achievement. I have found the assignments of interest and the workshops helpful as you get to meet like minded people who you can chat to. The tutors are always on hand in some way if you need a little encouragement or help. Gaining this qualification, for me has been well worthwhile.

After some initial struggles to engage in this new form of learning we both found that practising the Tai Chi Qigong Shabashi ourselves has proved to be a life enhancing experience.

Teaching it to our residents has been a great gift to see their initial resistance transformed into positive participation, with all the benefits physical, mental and spiritual, being evident by the time they complete their time in primary treatment. This is supported by residents feedback  in individual counselling sessions and exit questionnaires.  Tai Chi has become a valuable part of our working week.

After several years away from studying, my initial response to attending the induction day for the course, it was a bit daunting as to whether I could do the study using an online resource.  However, the tutor was extremely encouraging and went through the Wiki information slowly, helping all of us.

By the end of the induction, whilst still a little apprehensive about what lay before me, I was more confident that once I got going I would be fine.  The fear is often worse than the task itself.  Sure enough, I was right.  Once I got going and got the hang of the assignments and started to get into it, it became much easier.  I have learnt a lot about Tai Chi, and in so doing, it has now given me the confidence to start a Shibashi class of my own, and even better, sign up for the Tai Chi Foundation course.  Thanks to Gill and Dan for all their encouragement and support.  I couldn’t have done it without you!

An excellent course, flexible but with lots of support. I definitely feel I have done something for myself, which in turn is helping others. I am teaching Shibashi movements to patients on my ward, for older people with mental health problems. It has proved to be a calming and beneficial but gentle form of exercise. 2 of my ladies have since joined a class near to their home.
